São pequenas plantas herbáceas, de folha simples, alternas, das regiões temperadas a subtropicais. Podem ser encontradas na Europa e Norte de África.
O sistema APG inclui estas plantas na família Plantaginaceae, situando-as na ordem Lamiales.
