Carreira acadêmica
Lumley mestrou e se tornou doutor pela Universidade Johns Hopkins em 1954 e 1957, respectivamente. Ele começou sua carreira acadêmica na Universidade Estadual da Pensilvânia, quando se tornou Professor de Engenharia Aeroespacial.[2]
