- (Setesdal) IPA(key): [ˈou̯ːs.lou̯ː]
Old Norse
Alternative forms
- Ásló — in West Norwegian sources
Etymology
From older *Ǫ́sló where the ǫ́ is nasalised (whence the -n- in Dutch Ansloo), from Proto-Norse *ᚨᚾᛊᚢᛚᚨᚢᚺᚢ (*ansulauhu), from Proto-Germanic *ansuz (“god, deity”) + *lauhō f (“clearing, meadow”). According to Sandnes and Stemshaug, the name has likely been around since before the first century.
Another theory is that the first element comes from áss (“hill, beam”), from Proto-Germanic *amsaz, but this is unlikely, due to the u-umlauted ǫ́ reflected in Ósló.
