From Proto-Hellenic *lāwós, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂wos (“people (under arms)”), from *leh₂- (“military action”).[1] Cognate with Hittite 𒆷𒄴𒄩𒀸 (laḫḫa-, “campaign”) and Phrygian λαϝαγταει (lawagtaei).
