Etymology

From earlier *ašťə-, possibly derived from Proto-Mordvinic *äź(ə)- (which is from Proto-Uralic *ëśe- (to exist, be located)) + *-tV (reflexive suffix?). Compare dialectal Erzya eščems.[1] Akin to Moksha ащемс (aščems).
