Possibly from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *sirɜ (“straight, tall, high, slim”), which may be derived from Proto-Finno-Permic *sira- (“to splinter, shatter”) (compare Erzya срадомс (sradoms, “to spread”)).
