From earlier *äźəm, from Proto-Mordvinic *äźəmə, from Pre-Mordvinic *äźemä, inherited from Proto-Uralic *aśe- ((to) put, set, place, set up a tent). Related to Finnish asema (position, state; status; station), asettaa ((to) put, place, set), asua ((to) live, reside).
