From earlier *äźəm, from Proto-Mordvinic *äźəmə, from Pre-Mordvinic *äźemä, inherited from Proto-Uralic *aśe- (“(to) put, set, place, set up a tent”). Related to Finnish asema (“position, state; status; station”), asettaa (“(to) put, place, set”), asua (“(to) live, reside”).
