From *soŋ-qï (“last, latest”), from Proto-Turkic *soŋ (“back; end; after”).

Cognate with Kazakh соңғы (soñğy), Kyrgyz соңку (soŋku), Uzbek soʻnggi, Turkmen soňky, Tuvan соңгу (soñgu, “last”).

Synchronously, һуң (hoñ, “after, then; late”) +‎ -ғы (-ğı).
