According to Ačaṙean, borrowed from Iranian *aži-piθrā (literally “whose father is a snake”). For the constituents compare Avestan 𐬀𐬲𐬌 (aži, “snake”) and 𐬞𐬌𐬙𐬀𐬭 (pitar, “father”), genitive 𐬞𐬌𐬚𐬭𐬋 (piθrō).
