փաղէժ
Old Armenian
Etymology
The origin is unknown. Looks similar to փաղանգ (pʿałang). The ending is similar to the Iranian diminutive suffix -էճ (-ēč).
Noun
փաղէժ • (pʿałēž)
- a kind of arachnid that bites stags
- 6th century, Philo of Alexandria, Yałags ban unel ew anasun kendaneacʿd, aṙ Liwsimakʿos [De Animalibus] :[1][2]
- Քանզի եղջերուք առ խածածս փաղիժիցն իմացան փոխանակ դեղ իւրեանց խեցգետի, որոյ կերակուրն անդէն բժկէ։

- Translation by Abraham Terian
- When deer are pricked by venomous spiders, they consider hops for their remedy and are healed.
- Քանզի եղջերուք առ խածածս փաղիժիցն իմացան փոխանակ դեղ իւրեանց խեցգետի, որոյ կերակուրն անդէն բժկէ։
Usage notes
- Attested only in Philo in the form փաղիժ-ից-ն (pʿałiž-icʿ-n, genitive plural), where it translates φαλάγγιον (phalángion). Some dictionaries reconstruct the nominative as *փաղիժ (*pʿałiž), but this is incorrect as the genitive plural would then be *փաղժից (*pʿałžicʿ).
- In the manuscript margin glossed with փաղանգ (pʿałang).
