Borrowed from Biblical Hebrew וּכְאוֹר‎ (“and as the light”), cf. 2 Samuel 23:4. The [aɪ̯] sound may have been influenced by מעשׂה‎ (mayse). Compare the etymology of ברוגז‎ (broygez).[1]
