شاه‌مات

Persian

Alternative forms

  • شه‌مات (šah mât), شهمات (šahmât)

Etymology

Literally, the king is amazed, from شاه (šâh, king) + مات (mât, amazed). According to Barnhardt, the second element was confused with مَاتَ (māta, to die) and borrowed into Romance languages with the sense "the king died."[1]
