Etymology

Probably via Middle Persian from Sanskrit *कल्क-कल्याणक (kalka-kalyāṇaka, literally prosperous oily sediment, good unguent or paste), or just कल्याणक (kalyāṇaka, prosperous) which by itself already denotes an electuary oil, or जलकरङ्क (jalakaraṅka, coconut), where करङ्क (karaṅka, skeleton, skull; the mere shell of coconut).
