Presumably a borrowing from Aramaic מְדִינְתָּא‎ (məḏīntā) or Classical Syriac ܡܕ݂ܝܼܢ݇ܬܿܵܐ‎ (məḏīttā). Cognate with Hebrew מדינה‎ (məḏînâ, “state”), Ugaritic 𐎎𐎄𐎐𐎚 (mdnt). The root م د ن‎ (m-d-n) is denominal.
