From the root م ل ح (m-l-ḥ); compare مَلُحَ (maluḥa, “to be salty, to be handsome”), مِلْح (milḥ, “salt, beauty”). Since salt has been costly and made dishes notably “tasty”, the sense of “beautiful” developed.
