Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hásyati (“to throw”) from the root *Has- (“to throw, fling”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬣𐬵𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (aŋ́hiieiti, “to throw”), Younger Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬌𐬡𐬌𐬌𐬁𐬯𐬙𐬀 (huuaiβiiāsta, “well thrown”) Old Persian 𐎠𐏃𐎹𐎫𐎠 (a-h-y-t-a /āhyatā/, “[it] was thrown”). Cognates outside of Indo-Iranian are uncertain; compare perhaps Hittite [script needed] (siye-, “to throw, release”), which may derive from a different root, Proto-Indo-European *seH₁i- (“to release”), instead.
