Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *HíHštay, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂e-h₂óyḱe ~ *h₂eh₂iḱḗr, reduplicated stative of *h₂eyḱ- (“to have, own”). Cognate with English own, owe, Danish eje. The Sanskrit root is ईश् (īś).
