Etymology
Of unclear origin. Attempts to connect the word to कृत् (kṛt, “to twist threads, to wind”) are phonetically unconvincing. Przyluski considers the word as related to कुट (kuṭa, “fort, stronghold”), while Gundert derives the word from Dravidian (compare Telugu గోడ (gōḍa, “wall”)).
