Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *kṣipáti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšwipáti, from Proto-Indo-European *kswip-é-ti, from *ksweybʰ- (“to shake, cast off”).
Cognate with Russian шибать (šibatʹ), Old English swāpan (whence English sweep, swoop).
