Etymology
A term of unclear meaning. The meaning generally given in dictionaries for this term is "bush", particularly for the form क्षुप (kṣupa), and is generally connected to Iranian terms like Central Kurdish شیو (şîw, “shrub, wood”), Wakhi [script needed] (šipk, “shrub”), and Persian چوب (čub, “wood, stick”).
However, it has been alternatively interpreted to mean "mushroom", particularly in the form क्षुम्प (kṣumpa). According to this theory, it would be related to a variety of words for mushroom and fungus across Europe and Asia, such as German Schwamm (“sponge”), Pashto غومبه (ǧumba, “mushroom”), and Sindhi कुम्भी (kumbhī, “mushroom”).
