Etymology 1
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *gr̥dʰrás, from Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾l̥dʰ-ró-s, from *g⁽ʷ⁾eldʰ- (“to desire greedily”).
Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬜𐬀 (gərəδa, “greedy”), Proto-Slavic *gȏldъ (“hunger”).
