Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *deyh₂p- (to purify with light), extension of *deyh₂- (to shine, be bright). Related to दय् (day, to shine); outside of Indic, compare Ancient Greek δῆλος (dêlos, visible) and Old Armenian դէպ (dēp, accident, case, suitable), an Iranian borrowing.
