Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *deyh₂p- (“to purify with light”), extension of *deyh₂- (“to shine, be bright”). Related to दय् (day, “to shine”); outside of Indic, compare Ancient Greek δῆλος (dêlos, “visible”) and Old Armenian դէպ (dēp, “accident, case, suitable”), an Iranian borrowing.
