From Proto-Indo-Iranian *diHw- ~ *dyuH- (“to endeavour”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬁𐬛𐬍𐬎𐬎𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬧𐬙𐬍 (ādīuuiieiṇtī, “to endeavour”), Ossetian ӕндеун (ændewn), ӕндиуын (ændiwyn, “to dare”).
