Etymology
Of uncertain origin. The original meaning is either "size, measure" (for which compare especially पल (pala, “a measure of weight”)), or "skin, leather" (for which compare Ancient Greek πέλλα (pélla, “bowl”), पालवी (pālavī, “a kind of vessel”)).
