Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀸𑀟 (*pāhāḍa, “mountain”), perhaps from Sanskrit पाषी (pāṣī, “stone”) or Sanskrit पाषाण (pāṣāṇa, “stone, rock”). Cognate with Nepali पहाड (pahāḍ), Punjabi ਪਹਾੜ (pahāṛ), Gujarati પહાડ (pahāḍ), Bengali পাহাড় (pahaṛ), Assamese পাহাৰ (pahar), Sylheti ꠙꠣꠀꠠ (faaṛ).
