Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘹𑘚𑘰 (peḍā), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑁂𑀟 (peḍa), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁂𑀟 (*peḍa, lump). Cognate with Gujarati પેંડા (peṇḍā), Hindustani پیڑَا (peṛā) / पेड़ा (peṛā), Punjabi ਪੇੜਾ (peṛā) / پیڑا (peṛā), Odia ପେଡା (peḍa), ପେଣ୍ଡା (peṇḍa), Bengali পেঁড়া (pẽṛa).
