Etymology
Compound of भग (bhága, name of an Āditya who bestows wealth, fortune, and love) + दत्त (dattá, “given”), literally “given by Bhaga”. Doublet of बगदाद (bagadāda). Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬀𐬖𐬊𐬛𐬁𐬙𐬀 (baγodāta), Old Persian *Bagadātah.
