Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰáwHati, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéwH-e-ti, an innovated verb stem derived from *bʰuH- (“to appear, become, rise up”).
Cognate with Ancient Greek φύω (phúō), Avestan 𐬠𐬎 (bu), Latin fuī, Old English bēon (whence English be).
