Etymology
Probably borrowed from Dravidian; compare Telugu మొట్టు (moṭṭu, “to rap with the knuckles”). Perhaps also related to मुण्ट् (muṇṭ, “to crush, grind”), मूट (mūṭa, “a basket or bundle”), and Tamil முடை (muṭai, “to plait, braid”)
