From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hláwpas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hláwpas, from Proto-Indo-European *Hrówp-o-s, from the root *Hrewp- (“to break, tear (up)”) + *-os. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *raubaz (“rape; robbery”).[1][2]
