Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wanáwti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wanáwti, from either or both Proto-Indo-European *wn̥h₁-néw-ti ~ *wn̥h₁-nw-énti (“to love”) and *wn̥-néw-ti ~ *wn̥-nw-énti (“to overcome, win”). Cognate with Old English winnan.
