From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hsúšyati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂sús-ye-ti, from *h₂sews- (to be dry). Cognate with Ancient Greek αὔω (aúō, to ignite, singe), Russian суши́ть (sušítʹ, to dry), Lithuanian saũsinti, Old English sēarian (whence English sear).
