From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰaymantás, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeyméns, from *ǵʰey- (“winter”). Cognate with Latin hībernum (“winter”), Ancient Greek χεῖμᾰ (kheîma), Persian زمستان (zemestân), Old Armenian ձմեռն (jmeṙn), Avestan 𐬰𐬌𐬌𐬃 (ziiā̊, “winter”).
