Inherited from Middle Bengali শিওলি (śiōli), medially vowel raised form of an earlier শিঅলি (śioli), h-dropped form of an even earlier শিহলি (śiholi), from Old Bengali *শেহলিআ (*śehaliā) with apocope and initial vowel raising, from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀰𑁂𑀪𑀸𑀮𑀺𑀆 (śebhāliā), from Sanskrit शेफालिका (śephālikā), from शेफाल (śephāla). Cognate with Assamese শেৱালি (xewali), Odia ସିଆଳି (siaḷi), Odia ସିଆରି (siari), Sinhalese සේපාලිකා (sēpālikā), Burmese ဆိပ်ဖလူး (hciphpa.lu:). Doublet of শেফালি (śephali).
