Inherited from Prakrit *𑀕𑁄𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀻 (*gŏddī), borrowed from a substrate language. Compare Sanskrit क्रोड (kroḍa, “bosom”), Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑁄𑀟𑁆𑀟 (*goḍḍa, “knee”).

Cognate with Old Marwari 𑅗𑅔𑅥𑅑 (godi), Hindi गोद (god), Punjabi ਗੋੱਦੀ (goddī), Nepali गोद् (god), Maithili 𑒑𑒽𑒠𑓂 (god).
