Inherited from Prakrit 𑀘𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀞 (ciṭṭha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓- (-ika-), from Sanskrit *चिष्ट (ciṣṭa, “message”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćiṣṭás, possibly from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čištás, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷis-tós, from *kʷeys- (“to observe”).[1] Cognate with Hindustani چٹھی / चिट्ठी (ciṭṭhī), Punjabi ਚਿੱਟ (ciṭṭa) / چِٹّ (ciṭṭ), Nepali चिठी (ciṭhī), Marathi चिठ्ठी (ciṭhṭhī), Bengali চিঠি (ciṭhi), Assamese চিঠি (sithi).
