ભાત (bhāt, “rice”)

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀪𑀢𑁆𑀢 (bhatta) with semantic shift, as rice was distributed among close ones, from Sanskrit भक्त (bhaktá), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰaktás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰh₂g-tó-s, from the root *bʰeh₂g- (“to divide, distribute”). Doublet of ભક્ત (bhakt) and બખત (bakhat).

• The food sense is a semantic loan from Pali bhatta (“food, meal”).

Cognate with Assamese ভাত (bhat), Bengali ভাত (bhat), Dhivehi ބަތް‎ (bat̊), Hindi भात (bhāt), Marathi भात (bhāt), Sinhalese බත (bata), Sylheti ꠜꠣꠔ (báto).
