Etymology

Inherited from Old Gujarati वांचइ (vāṃcaï, “to read”), वाचइ (vācaï), adapted from Sanskrit वाचयति (vācayati, “to cause to speak”)[1][2]. Compare Marathi वाचणे (vāċṇe), Hindi बाँचना (bā̃cnā), Punjabi ਵਾਚਣਾ (vācṇā) / واچݨا‎ (vācṇā).
