From Proto-Dravidian *pōẓ. Cognate with Tamil பொழுது (poḻutu), போழ்து (pōḻtu, “time”), Malayalam പൊഴുത് (poḻutŭ), Kannada ಹೊತ್ತು (hottu, “time”), Tulu ಪೊರ್ತ್ (portŭ, “time, sun”), Gondi [script needed] (poṛd, “sun, hour”) and Kolami పొద్ద్ (podd, “sun”).
