Derived from Proto-Dravidian *cir- (“dark, black”). Cognate with Kannada ಇರುಳು (iruḷu), Tamil இருள் (iruḷ), Telugu ఇరులు (irulu) and Tulu ಇರ್ಳು (irḷu). Doublet of ഇരുട്ട് (iruṭṭŭ).
