Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܝܫܘܥ‎ (īšōʿ), in turn from Biblical Hebrew יֵשׁוּעַ‎ (yēšûaʿ, “Jesus”), a syncopated form of יְהוֹשֻׁעַ‎ (yəhôšuaʿ, “Joshua”).
