Etymology

From ของ (kɔ̌ɔng, “thing”) +‎ หมั้น (mân, “betrothal; engagement”).

Probably first used in 1934, when the Act Promulgating Book 5 of the Civil and Commercial Code 1934 (พระราชบัญญัติให้ใช้บทบัญญัติบรรพ ๕ แห่งประมวลกฎหมายแพ่งและพาณิชย์ พุทธศักราช ๒๔๗๗) was drafted (signed into law on 27 May 1935).
