From Proto-Tai *ɣamᴮ (“night”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨤᩴ᩵ᩣ, Lao ຄ່ຳ (kham), Lü ᦆᧄᧈ (xam¹), Shan ၶမ်ႈ (khām), Tai Dam ꪁꪾ꪿, Ahom 𑜁𑜪 (khaṃ), Zhuang haemh, Saek กฺั้ม.
