From Proto-Tai *ɓaːwᴮ (unmarried man). Cognate with Lao ບ່າວ (bāo), Northern Thai ᨷ᩵ᩤ᩠ᩅ, ᦢᦱᧁᧈ (ḃaaw¹), Tai Dam ꪚ꪿ꪱꪫ, Shan မၢဝ်ႇ (màao) or ဝၢဝ်ႇ (wàao), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜧 (mow) or 𑜉𑜨𑜧𑜈𑜫 (moww), Zhuang mbauq.
