From Pali sāmaṇera (“novice”); perhaps via Angkorian Old Khmer sāmaṇera (“novice monk”). Compare Old Khmer sāmanera, samnera, saṃnera, saṃṇera, saṃmnera, saṃnœra, saṃmnœra, srāmanera; Modern Khmer សាមណេរ (saamaʼnee); Sanskrit श्रामणेर (śrāmaṇera).
