Etymology

Compound of 忘れ (wasure, to forget, the <ruby>連用形<rp>(</rp><rt>れんようけい</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby> (ren'yōkei, stem of continuative form) of <ruby><rp>(</rp><rt>わす</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby>れる (wasureru)) + 形見 (gatami, momento). The katami changes to gatami as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
