Compound of 忘れ (wasure, “to forget, the <ruby>連用形<rp>(</rp><rt>れんようけい</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby> (ren'yōkei, “stem of continuative form”) of <ruby>忘<rp>(</rp><rt>わす</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby>れる (wasureru)”) +‎ 形見 (gatami, “momento”). The katami changes to gatami as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
