Etymology

Compound of 意気(いき) (iki, disposition; spirit, courage, confidence) + () (komi, going in; being full of, the (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb () (komu, to go in; to be full of).).[1][2] The komi changes to gomi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First cited to a text from 1656.[1]
