Etymology

First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 가모〮티 (Yale: kàmwóthì).

Possibly from 가물다 (gamulda, to be blighted with drought) or 감다 (gamda, to be black) + (-chi), a suffix often found in fish names.
