A wanderwort, compare Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kjaŋ (“ginger”), (q.v. for more); Proto-Vietic *s-gəːŋ ~ s-kəːŋ (“ginger”) (> Vietnamese gừng / gầng); Proto-Tai *χiːŋᴬ (“ginger”) (> Thai ขิง (kǐng), Lao ຂີງ (khīng), Shan ၶိင် (khǐng)).
