Known as Cotrone from the Middle Ages until 1928, when the name was changed back to one closer to the original Latin name for the town, Crotōn or Crotō (genitive Crotōnis), ultimately from Ancient Greek Κρότων (Krótōn). It is still called Cutroni in the local Sicilian dialect. Compare Italian Cutrona.
